(10-13) 15:31 PDT EL CERRITO -- A man stabbed and bludgeoned his sister and her husband to death in El Cerrito in 2006 because he thought the couple were too liberal, were raising their children wrong and because they hadn't invited him over for Christmas, a prosecutor told jurors Tuesday.

Edward Wycoff, 40, of the Sacramento suburb of Citrus Heights coldly planned the slayings, including getting Lasik surgery and using night-vision goggles so he could find his way around the house where Julie Wycoff Rogers, 47, lived with her husband, Paul Rogers, 48, prosecutor Mark Peterson said.

He also purposefully picked the date for the killings - Jan. 31, 2006 - Peterson said in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez. That was 20 years to the day after Wycoff's grandmother, whom he hated, left his home after breaking her hip, the prosecutor said.

Wycoff regarded his grandmother as "evil" and thought his life improved considerably after she left, Peterson said. Because he believed the couple had also been making his life miserable, he chose that date to break into their home on Rifle Range Road overlooking Wildcat Canyon Regional Park, stab them repeatedly with a knife and bludgeon them with a wheelbarrow handle, Peterson said in his opening statement in Wycoff's murder trial.

Although Wycoff was also armed with a gun, he didn't use it because he didn't want to boost the cause of gun-control supporters, the prosecutor said. Wycoff, who is serving as his own attorney, told jurors that he still hates the couple "a little." "They owe me a life," he said. "This has ruined my life, and Julie and Paul owe me for that."

Wycoff agreed with the prosecutor that he resented members of Paul Rogers' family for their liberal politics, and that he thought the couple were at times "too easy" when they disciplined their children. He also said that "it wasn't just Christmas" when he wasn't invited over. It was also Thanksgiving in 2005, the year his and Julie Rogers' father died. "When someone does that, they hate you - they're out to destroy you," Wycoff said.

Peterson said Wycoff had planned to adopt the couple's three children after he committed the killings. The prosecutor played for the jury the 911 call made by Eric Rogers, then 17, after the killer broke into the home about 4:30 a.m. The boy's sister, Laurel, then 12, could be heard screaming in the background. The children tried to help their father, who told them, "I love you all" before dying, the prosecutor said. Eric Rogers brushed his father's hair, telling him, "I love you, papa." Peterson said Julie Rogers' last words to police were, "Kids OK?" The children were not harmed. A third child, then 15, was not living at the home at the time.

In an interview from jail after the slayings, Wycoff, who is 6 foot 5 and weighs 300 pounds, said he had tried to disguise himself during the killings by wearing a motorcycle helmet and attaching a ponytail with his late mother's hair. In a poem, Wycoff wrote, "My sister, I gutted her like a fish," Peterson said. "And in fact, he did," the prosecutor added, "and he's proud of it."

Wycoff was arrested after he turned up at a hospital in Placer County, seeking treatment for a gash on his leg that he probably sustained while breaking into the home, Peterson said. Wycoff is charged with two counts of murder along with the special circumstance alleging that he committed more than one murder. Prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

Wycoff's opening statement indicated he would try to justify the killings to the jury, rather than deny he committed them. At the close of his remarks, Wycoff told the "few fans" in the gallery to contact his advisory attorney, David Briggs, if they wanted autographs.

The Seattle Craigslist sex scandal

San Francisco Chronicle columnist Violet Blue has posted a comprehensive roundup of the Craigslist sex scandal making the blog-rounds since last week. Over the weekend, I solicited comment from others known for insight on privacy and life online, and will post their thoughts here as they come in.

For what it’s worth, I think what Jason Fortuny did is shameful and wrong in the extreme. But one obvious moral to this tale: your private information is as intimate as your private parts. There are serious risks to sharing either with strangers you bump into online.

Violet writes:

Last Monday Seattle resident Jason Fortuny [Ed. Note: pictured at left] (and a friend) carried out a thought experiment into reality -- one I think anyone who has surfed Craigslist sex ads has entertained. He took a hardcore Women Seeking Men ad from another city and reposted it to see how many replies he could get in 24 hours (the ad's photo at right). Then he published every single response -- photos, emails, IM info, phone numbers, names, everything, to a public wiki (Encyclopedia Dramatica -- site is up and down, check back if down). Then they went public on Jason's LiveJournal page calling it The Craigslist Experiment, inviting readers to identify the CL ad's responders and add more info ("Your Goal: identify people you know IRL and point them out. We've already had great successes here.") It has turned into quite a meme, getting posted all over the place.

(...) They got 178 responses, with 145 photos of men -- cocks, faces, more; full email addresses (both personal and business addresses), names, and a few IM names and phone numbers. One respondent used a Microsoft employee email address, another used a usar.army.mil (military) email address. They got audio, too. Since then, there has been one copycat in Portland. Respondents have emailed him asking him to take the info down, and he has simply published their requests.

Since then Jason has had *his* private info published to CL and been threatened physically, threatened with lawsuits, and has been hated on by everyone from online BDSM communities to Wired (and I saw he was interviewed by the NY Times on friday Sept. 8, so I wonder what position they'll take on all of this). Wired called him "sociopathic" while commenters are saying things like "Disclosing an email to the public is indeed a violation of privacy, and if anyone has a spine, they will take you down with a massive lawsuit that will make you regret ever doing this. You are a liar, a xenophobe, an asshole, and deserve to have your ass beaten to within an inch of your life."

Reader comment: Anonymous BoingBoing reader says,

I'm writing to you from my real email account in order to demonstrate that I'm for real, but hoping that anything I may say will only be published anonymously.

I am a woman in my early 30s who has used Craigslist in my city to find casual sex, so I took a particular interest in the story of Jason Fortuny.

I tend to agree with Wired News: I think this is a deeply hateful act.

I've posted a few "Casual Encounters" ads at different times looking for various things. The first ad alone received over 300 replies. Some of them were beyond repugnant -- the bestiality proposition springs to mind. The majority were unappealing but mundane -- people who just didn't dance the same way I do, mentally speaking, didn't know how to compose a well-thought-out email or articulate themselves attractively. Those were ones like the one-liner "yo, hit me on MSN", that kind of thing. I received a lot of dickpix. Then, there were a tiny fraction that drew me in and showed me that as much consideration had gone into their reply as I put into my original post. Those were people I connected with, corresponded with (from a gmail account), and eventually met.

As a writer I have put a lot of thought into how I could use these experiences in my work. But even though I have a goldmine of material in my gmail account, I would *never* reveal these people's identities or post their personal information. It simply breaks a very basic implied trust. Now, the situation with Fortuny is different because he's just taking the piss for his own amusement. But I think that makes it even worse.

It's a big ol' world and there are intelligent, worthwhile people in the Craigslist personals... *real* people. They're (mostly!) not much different from you in that we all have the same needs and desires and cravings. This is just one manner of fulfilling them. My experiences have brought me much joy and a small measure of sorrow, but ultimately they have made my life unquestionably richer. The fact that this jagoff thinks that he is above these feelings, that he is pissing all over CL personals posters -- by extension pissing all over me -- is to me simply repugnant.

This post is stretched (at least for me) due to an extremely long single word. Maybe something to fix, a cut-off point or something.

I'm fed up with the lag in browsing. I went to google chrome for the time being, which is running circles around firefox. Anybody else have this problem?

My recommended list used to be full of all sorts of good stuff, but since I didn't have the time to look through it all, I didn't vote on everything. Now for the last week or even longer, it's just empty. This sucks!

Did we have the videos expire or what happened? I would much rather that anything I didn't vote on would be counted there; Intelligent Viewing is much better than just random.

Why is VS so slow today? Navigating from one page to another is like walking through a swamp. I've also noticed it's been kind of slow off and on in recent days, but today takes the cake. Someone pull the gerbil out of blankfist's ass and put it on the wheel already.

Try as I may, I simply cannot get videocu.lt to load. Anyone else having a problem getting that dark and mysterious site of video elitism to load? I even went to archive.org, but apparently that site was way too cool to be archived properly in the wayback machine.

The site called itself "Vanguard of the Elitist Menace"... whatever the hell that meant. Legend maintains it was a far off place where mysterious self important vampires congregated to mock the banality of VideoSift. Weird. Even weirder, VideoSift is still here! YAY!

If you search around these hallowed halls you can even find the completely embarrassing moment when some people decided to leave for a place they felt more welcomed... a place like videocu.lt. If you're too lazy to do the search yourself, then let me just point you in the right direction: http://obscure.videosift.com/talk/This-Is-The-End

Oh yeah. That's the stuff.

Ok,

I registered to vote online when i moved to Ellensburg, and the ballot for city council positions came the other day.

I wanted to particpate since they made it so easy... so i googled the candidates and eventually just came to a county website that had statements.

The incumbent candidate, Obie DJ O'Brien, seems to be very accomplished and involved in the community, serving on various administrative boards.

There are two other candidates. I was eager to see what THEY had to offer, and was excited to view the statements.

View them:

I think the choice is obvious.

Larry J "The Solution" Nickel is GETTING MY VOTE.

Yeah, these three travelers share something alright, a profound stupidity worthy of being selected against by evolution...

Who in their right mind thinks that hiking along the Iran/Iraq border as an American is advisable?

Seriously, I have no compassion for these idiots. Iran can keep em as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know if it would boost VideoSift's revenue stream or not, or if it's an effective form of advertisement, or if there are enough interested members who would buy one. That's why I'm asking. Here's an idea I had for one:

Photobucket

I'm not saying it's great; it's just an idea. I figured a few famous thumbnail images might help to convey that we're a site with famous videos. The only thumbnail on that t-shirt that could cause problems is the one of Yahtzee, because I'm guessing it's trademarked. The others I'm pretty sure aren't. If any of you can think of better thumbnails to include then please suggest them, or if you have a completely different concept for a shirt design then please suggest those too. I don't know how all the colors in my design would come out on a silk screen, so maybe mine wouldn't work anyway.

Or we could go with this:

Thought i'd post an ST to celebrate the new *fail channel. I had the idea to do this every time we gain a new one, but so far haven't got round to it. Maybe I should remedy that.

Anyway, today i'm thinking about the things that annoy me. I know I always go on about people moaning too much and end up contradicting myself by complaining about it relentlessly, but there is nothing like a good old bitch! I just believe there is a time and a place and if possible it shouldn't hurt anyone's feelings. So off the top of my head, here are a few things that I hate or make me antsy (ie they fail )...

Hinters - Those people who want something and won't ask you directly so they proceed to beat around the bush until you grasp what they mean and YOU end up offering THEM something so then they don't have to feel like you've done them a favour! On the flip side of that because of people like that, I hate it when i'm mentioning something and then people think I'M hinting when i'm not (because I never ever would). Gah!

McDonald's pisses me off on every level and now it's open 24 hours around here. Fuck you.

People who never discipline their own kids but get angry when you end up having to do it for them. Grow up.

Censoring swear words so you can still see what they are. Especially on something like a website. Everyone's seen that Louis CK "N-word" vid right? Same fucking thing!

Smoking around non-smokers. It's just rude, they choose not to be a whore to the nicotine. They may be polite enough to say they don't mind, but how dare people presume it's ok. No need to do it at any point, selfish bastards. I'm a smoker. Going along with that, people who smoke round children should be arrested on sight.

Someone making a stupid mistake while they're driving and then seeing it was a woman. Again.

Public displays of affection. People who make you feel like a gooseberry. Why do it, whose benefit is it for, what makes you think it's fun for us??!!? Get out.

Ahhh i'm done

Greetings sifters! Behold the channel for people being dumb. Just dumb. The main difference between EIA and fail is simply EIA requires actions that prevent you from reproducing...fail is just being damn stupid, so please, bring all your fail and dump it here! It will be well looked after!

I was wondering what the sift collective thought about a new *fail channel? In recent months its become more apparant that people doing stupid dangerous things to themselves or others is definitely eia channel content - but people doing the classic *fail - anything from politics to kids - is having to put up with a simple tag.

No more I say! We need a *fail channel! And I want to make it

Also recently EIA is also taking in more serious videos regarding Darwinian content and science on evolution - so this would be a nice separation of science and stupid.
